United Way Coastal and Western Connecticut Prepares to Launch New Volunteer Platform to Support HR1 Work & Volunteer Requirements and Strengthen Community Engagement
United Way Coastal and Western Connecticut announced today that it will launch a new regional volunteer engagement platform in mid‑June, powered by Galaxy Digital. The platform will serve as a centralized hub for volunteer opportunities across the region and a critical tool for residents navigating new federal HR1 work‑requirement changes.
Under HR1, many adults ages 18–64 receiving SNAP will be required to complete 80 hours per month of work, training, or volunteering to maintain benefits. Medicaid (HUSKY) work requirements will follow in 2027. Volunteering is one of the allowable activities for meeting these requirements, according to the Connecticut Department of Social Services.
“This platform represents the kind of leadership our region deserves,” said Isabel Almeida, President & CEO of United Way of Coastal & Western Connecticut. “As HR1 brings significant changes for many residents, we are committed to ensuring people have clear, supportive pathways to stay connected to the resources they rely on. Volunteerism has always strengthened our communities and now it also provides a critical bridge for individuals navigating new requirements. By bringing nonprofits, municipalities, and residents together in one coordinated system, we’re building a stronger, more responsive network for everyone.”
Summer 2026: Building the Regional Volunteer Network
Before the platform opens to the public, United Way is inviting:
- Nonprofits to onboard and post volunteer opportunities
- Municipal partners to share community service needs
- Corporate teams to prepare group volunteer profiles
This summer, United Way will work closely with partners to expand opportunities across all 27 towns in its footprint.
A Modern, Mobile‑Friendly Volunteer Hub
Once launched, the platform will allow residents to:
- Browse volunteer opportunities
- Track hours digitally
- Join corporate or community teams
“Our goal is to make this transition as seamless and dignified as possible for residents and as efficient as possible for our partners,” said Ashley Gaudiano, Chief Operating Officer. “We’re focused on timely response, strong collaboration, and creating a platform that truly works for the people who will use it every day. Whether someone is volunteering to give back, to build skills, or to meet HR1 requirements, they deserve a welcoming, well‑organized experience. This is about connection, partnership, and making sure our community is ready.”
